PREPARE

Our lives are full of shakable things - many good and wonderful things, yet temporary all the same. It’s comforting to know that there are some things and some One we can count on that cannot, ever, no matter what, be shaken: Jesus and His kingdom, Jesus’ forgiveness, Jesus’ covenantal love, Jesus victory, and Jesus’ ability to hold all things together - including us!

Prepare for this week’s message by reading through Psalm 16, praising God that “because the Lord is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

Prepare for this week’s lesson by reading** Psalm 16** and using the questions below.

  1. Read all of Psalm 16. What words and ideas stick out to you? How would you describe this Psalm? What do you think David was communicating about God through this Psalm?
  2. Read Psalm 16:1-4. Where did David look for protection? What does the word refuge mean? What did David mean that apart from God he has no good thing? (See James 1:17)
  3. How are the people of God described by David is verse 3? Is this how you view other Christians? Why or why not? How does being saved by Jesus change our perspective on other Christians? (See 1 John 3:14) How can we keep this perspective of other people despite their imperfections? (See Philippians 2:3-4)
  4. How did David describe those who run after false gods? What is a good definition of an idol? How do idols affect people? What are some of the idols that are prevalent in our culture?
  5. Read Psalm 16:5-6. What did David mean when he described God as his portion and cup? What imagery did David use to describe his inheritance? What do these things reveal about David’s feelings about God and what He has provided?
  6. Read Psalm 16:7-8. What does it mean that God counsels and instructs our hearts? What are the ways we receive this counsel and instruction? What does it mean to be shaken in life? How did David prevent being shaken? How does relationship with God help us to remain unshaken during the trials of life?
  7. Read Psalm 1:9-11. What promises of God did David highlight in these verses? How do they define biblical joy? What does it look like to find joy in the presence of God?
