Sermon Title & Text: “Christ is All in All” Colossians 3:5-12
2016 Teach. Reach. Love. Serve.
Series: The church at Colosse, was mixing their Christian faith with Jewish customs and Greek mythology. The result was a “philosophical” faith that leaves Christians overwhelmed by life. Paul’s letter to the church at Colosse is to demonstrate to us all, Jesus is Enough.
- Week 1, What are you asking God for? 1:9-14. Week 2, Christ is the fullness of God. 1:15-20. Week 3, The Goal of Christ is You 1:21-23. Week 4, The point of suffering 1:24-29. Week 5, Know the Struggle 2:1-5. Week 6, So Walk In Him 2:6-15. Week 7, A Growth That is From God 2:16-19. Week 8, The Value of Christ 2:20-23. Week 9, The reality of being raised with Christ 3:1-4. Week 10, Put off specific behaviors of the old nature & put on a new nature because Christ is All in All 3:5-12
- How do the 2 lists of what we “Put Off”, change your personal prayers, behavior, thoughts and walk with Christ?
a. List #1 Put To Death: Sexual Immorality, Impurity, Passion, Evil Desire, Covetousness. Col. 3:5
b. List #2 Put Away All: Anger, Wrath, Malice, Slander, Obscene Talk Col. 3:8 - In Col 3:10 Paul assumes Christians have put on the new nature. A new nature – continually renewed in the knowledge of the image of God (cf. Gen 1:26). In our new, divine nature (2 Peter 1:3-4) we now repeal & replace the attributes of the old nature w/the peace & freedom of Christ who is All in All!
- This week, pray through Paul’s 2 lists: Lord, any part of me that appears on theses two lists that’s alive to sexual temptation, evil desire, idolatry, anger, unkind behavior or words – please Lord reveal them to me and cause me to confess them before you. Lord, in these areas, teach me to make Christ All in All.
- Additional reading for further meditation on who now we are – In Christ: Ro. 6; Ro. 8:1-30; Gal. 4:1-7; 4:8-11; Gal. 5:1; Eph. 2:11-22; Eph. 4; Eph 5:8.
Lord, we pray these notes and this message are a source of strength, guidance, and spiritual deepening for us all. Amen.
