
Titus 2:1-10 A Portrait of Sound Doctrine
Verse 1
Sound – To be well, to be in good health. From this Greek word we get our word hygiene.
Luke 7:10, “…they found the slave in good health.”
Doctrine – Teaching or instruction, that which is taught. From this Greek word we get our word didactics, the art or science of teaching. Of the 21 occurrences of this word in the New Testament, 15 occur in the Pastoral Epistles.
1 Timothy – 1:10, 4:1, 4:13, 4:16, 5:17, 6:1, 6:3
2 Timothy – 3:10, 3:16, 4:3
Titus – 1:9, 2:1, 2:7, 2:10
Sound Doctrine is healthy teaching!
Sound doctrine will produce behavior that is consistent with the Word.
Sound doctrine is a proper understanding of God’s grace.
Verses 2-10 Sound doctrine applied to five groups:
Older men – verse 2
Older women – verse 3
Younger women – verses 4-5
Younger men – verses 6-8
Bondslaves – verses 9-10
Verse 2 - Older Men
Temperate – Clear headed, sober
Dignified – Worthy of respect
Sensible – Self controlled
Sound in faith – They trust in God
Sound in love – Concern for others
Sound in perseverance – They patiently endure because of their hope
Verse 3 - Older Women
Reverent – Their behavior shows their love for God
Not malicious gossips – Slandering others
Not enslaved to much wine – They don’t depend on enslaving substances
Teaching what is good – Sound in their teaching so they might encourage they younger women
Verses 4-5 - Young Women
Love their husbands – Put their husband’s welfare first
Love their children – Seek the best for their children
Be sensible – Self controlled
Be pure – Personal holiness
Workers at home – Produce orderliness in the home
Be kind – Of good constitution or nature, pleasant
Subject to their own husbands – Honoring God’s order and roll The reason - “…that the word of God may not be dishonored.”
Verses 6-8 Young Men
Be sensible – Self controlled
An example of good deeds – Their lifestyle exhibits good works
Purity in doctrine – Teaching and practicing sound doctrine
Dignified – Worthy of respect
Sound in speech:
-Above reproach – No grounds for accusation
-That the opponent may be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us Our behavior does make a difference with unbelievers!
Verses 9-10 - Bondslaves
Subject to their masters – Obedient
Well pleasing – They work hard
Not argumentative – They don’t grumble
Not pilfering – They don’t steal
Showing all good faith – They are completely trustworthy
Why do these things?
“That they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect.”
