2 Samuel 3:2-5 (NIV) 2 Sons were born to David in Hebron: His firstborn was Amnon the son of Ahinoam of Jezreel; 3 his second, Kileab the son of Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel; the third, Absalom the son of Maakah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; 4 the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; 5 and the sixth, Ithream the son of David’s wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron.

Three keys to becoming a great father …

I. GREAT FATHERS ARE

TO THEIR WIVES.

A. Loving fathers control their

.
a) 2 Samuel 11:1-5 (NIV) In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David
sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed
the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem. [
b) 2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the
palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”
c) 4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. (Now she was purifying herself from her monthly uncleanness.) [i.e. she was NOT pregnant!] Then she went back home. 5 The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant

B. David failed to

to his flesh.

a) Colossians 3:5 (NIV) Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly
nature [Flesh]: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

II. GREAT FATHERS ARE CAREFUL TO

THEIR CHILDREN.

A. Loving fathers take

to discipline their children!

b) Hebrews 12:6b-9 NIV “… the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” 7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!

B. David failed to

his kids-and it cost him.

a) 2 Samuel 13:1-2 (NIV) 1 In the course of time, Amnon [David’s 1st born] son of
David fell in love with Tamar, the beautiful sister of Absalom son of David. 2 Amnon became so obsessed with his sister Tamar that he made himself ill. She was a virgin, and it seemed impossible for him to do anything to her.

  1. In fact, it appears David never disciplined his kids!
    a) 1 Kings 1:6a (NIV) His father had never rebuked him [4th-Adonijah] by asking,
“Why do you behave as you do?”
    b) 1 Kings 1:6a (ESV) His father had never at any time displeased him by asking,
“Why have you done thus and so?
    c) 1 Kings 1:6a (NASB) His father had never [a]crossed him at any time by asking,
    “Why have you done so?”
    d) 1 Kings 1:6a (NET) Now his father had never corrected him by saying, “Why do
    you do such things?”
    c) 1 Kings 1:6a (TLB) Now his father, King David, had never disciplined him at any
time—not so much as by a single scolding!
    d) 1 Kings 1:6a (MSG) His father had spoiled him rotten as a child, never once
    reprimanding him.

III. GREAT FATHERS ARE FULLY

WITH
THEIR FAMILIES.
A. Loving fathers put family before .

B. David failed to

with his family.
FATHERHOOD

  1. David’s 3rd son ABSALOM (2 Samuel 14:24 & 2 Samuel 16:22)

C. Postscript… How did it

for David?

  1. David’s 4th son ADONIJAH (1 Kings 1)
  2. David’s 5th son SOLOMON (1 Kings 2)
