Hamartiology

The Greek word for sin is hamartia. Hamartia + ology equals hamartiology

The ORIGIN of Sin

The entrance of sin into the Universe – Ezekiel 28:11-19

The entrance of sin into the Human Race – Genesis 3, 1 Timothy 2:14

Why? – Ephesians 2:7

The REALITY of Sin

Scripture Declares the fact of sin – Romans 3:23, Galatians 3:22

Nature Proclaims the fact of sin – Romans 8:22

The Law Discovers the fact of sin – Romans 3:20

Experience Proves the fact of sin

Man Confesses the fact of sin – 1 Timothy 1:15, Psalm 51:4

The NATURE of Sin

Modern View – Ignorance, indiscretion, the trait of the beast, selfishness
Biblical View:

Sin is missing the mark – Romans 3:23

Sin is rebellion against God – Isaiah 1:2

Sin is debt – Romans 6:23,

Sin is unbelief – 1 John 5:10

Sin is ungodliness – Romans 5:6

Sin’s Direction:

Toward God – Sin is rebellion and failure to love God supremely (Deuteronomy 6:5)

Toward the Law – Sin is both willful transgression and violation through ignorance (Numbers 15:27, 30)

Toward Man – Sin is injustice toward others and failure to love others as ourselves (Leviticus 19:18)

Toward Self – Sin is selfishness and corruption (Romans 6:12)

The EXTENT of Sin

To the Heavens – Ezekiel 28:12-19, Job 1:6, Revelation 12:10

To the Earth:
1 – The vegetable kingdom (Genesis 3:17-18)
2 – The animal kingdom (Isaiah 11:6-9)
3 – Earth as part of creation (Romans 8:22)

The PENALITY of Sin

Natural Penalty – Disease, and physical death

Positive Penalty:
1 – Death (Romans 6:23, Revelation 20:14)
2 – Condemnation (John 3:18)
3 – Guilt (Romans 3:19)
4 – Everlasting Punishment (Matthew 25:46, 2 Thessalonians 1:9)

A Theological Question: do people go to hell because they are sinners?

Revelation 20:15 states the reason people are thrown into the lake of fire. The reason is that their names are not found written in the book of life.

Revelation 21:27 states that people enter into the heavenly Jerusalem because their names are written in the book of life.

What about John 8:24, “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

To die in unbelief means that they will forever be a slave of sin. All unbelievers are in a state of spiritual death which includes trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:1).

Believers are no longer slaves to sin – Romans 6:6

To die with Christ is to be freed from sin – Romans 6:7, 18

To die in unbelief is to remain a slave of sin – Romans6: 20

Unbelievers will go to hell with their sins paid for but they remain in the state of slavery to sin.
