Today: The Ministry of Jesus

The basis for the ministry of Jesus–

Luke 4:14-21
Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region. 15 He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. 16 When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. 17 The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: 18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, 19 and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come.” 20 He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. 21 Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”

Everything Jesus would do and say would be through the lens of this mission:
Good news to the poor
Release captives
Blind will see
Oppressed set free

Jesus’ ministry is a reflection of what He has called us to do–

Matthew 14:13-21
As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns. 14 Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 That evening the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16 But Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary—you feed them.” 17 “But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish!” they answered. 18 “Bring them here,” he said. 19 Then he told the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people. 20 They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers. 21 About 5,000 men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children!

1. Ministry is rarely .

Matthew 14:13-14
As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns. 14 Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

People are always in need.

2. Ministry opportunity is often hard to .

Matthew 14:15
That evening the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.”

This is where constant prayer, and keeping our spiritual eyes open, comes into play.

3. Ministry opportunity is often met with .

Matthew 14:16
But Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary—you feed them.”

People may feel reluctant when Jesus asks them to do something.

4. Ministry provision with us.

Matthew 14:17
“But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish!” they answered.

What’s in our hands is where God always starts.

5. Ministry provision is by God.

Matthew 14:18-19
“Bring them here,” he said. 19 Then he told the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people.

Ministry opportunities, met with compassionate and obedient followers of Jesus, always results in enough or even more than enough.

6. Ministry costs are never more than ministry .

Matthew 14:20
They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers.

Ministry will cost you something– time, money, energy, and/or convenience. The rewards far outweigh the costs!

Let’s commit to ministry by following the example of Jesus!
You don’t have to have a degree to help people.
You don’t have to have everything together for God to use you.
Open your eyes and heart to see what God will do with your obedience!
