Three keys to understanding the Biblical deacon…

I. WHAT IS THE

OF A DEACON?

1 Timothy 3:8a In the same way, deacons…

A. Where does the word

come from?

  1. Deacons are called “Diakonoi” (dee-AH-ko-noi) in the Greek.
    Philippians 1:1 To all God’s holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons.

B. Paul’s

regarding deacons are authoritative.

C. Eight Important

about deacons:

  1. Deacons are regulated by Paul’s instructions.
  2. Deacons are always mentioned the Overseers.
  3. Deacons are required to meet specific qualifications.
  4. Deacons are required to teach.
  5. Deacons are required to be by the church and it’s leaders.
  6. Deacons are church officeholders, like Overseers.
  7. Deacons’ wives are required to meet specific qualifications.
  8. Deacons who “serve well” get a blessing from God.

II. WHAT ARE THE

OF A DEACON?

1 Timothy 3:8-9 In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. 9 They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.

A. The deacon’s qualifications

:
1. Worthy of (Dignified).
2. Sincere (Lit. “Not double tonged”).
3. Not indulging [addicted to] much wine.
4. Not pursuing gain (Not greedy) (1 Timothy 6:10)
5. Hold to deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.

B. The necessity of

1 Timothy 3:8:10 They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.

C. The deacon’s

1 Timothy 3:11 In the same way, the women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.

Although sound Bible teachers advocate all five of these ideas, our conclusion is that Paul is referring to “Deacons’ wives.”

Qualifications for ALL godly women:
1. Worthy of respect (Others think well of her.)
2. Not malicious

(slanderer)
3. Temperate (Sober-minded/self controlled)
4. (Faithful, reliable & dependable)

D. The deacon’s

, children and household.

1 Timothy 3:12 A deacon must be faithful to his and must manage his children and his household well.

III.WHAT ARE THE

OF A DEACON?

1 Timothy 3:13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.

A. Deacons are servant-

to the Pastor/Elders.

B. Deacons who serve well are
