The Wonderful Strangeness of Christianity
Part of Sermon Notes

1 Peter 2:9-25

1. Christians should live wonderfully strange lives.

1 Peter 2:9-15

What does a wonderfully strange life look like?

A. We live for heaven: “we are the people of God.”

B. We fight sin: “abstain from sinful desires.”

C. We love people: “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.”

D. We trust God: Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority.

2. We have a wonderfully strange freedom.

1 Peter 2:16-20

A. The only way to be free is to acknowledge the Lordship of Christ in every area of our lives: “live as God’s slaves.”

  1. Christ has set us free from hypocrisy: “do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil”
  2. Christ has set us free from prejudice: “Show proper respect for EVERYONE.”

  3. Christ has set us free from isolation: “love the family of believers.”

  4. Christ has set us free to worship: “fear God.”

  5. Christ has set us free to persevere: “honor the emperor.”

B. Our freedom is not dictated by our circumstances: 1 Peter 2:18

  1. We can be free even when our situation is harsh: “in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters…”

  2. We can be free when we suffer injustice: “suffer for doing good”

3. Christians worship a wonderfully strange Savior.

1 Peter 2:21-25

A. Our Savior’s choice is wonderfully strange: “..Christ suffered for you.”

John 6:38

B. Our Savior’s patience is wonderfully strange: “When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.”

C. Our Savior’s sacrifice is wonderfully strange: “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross.

D. Our Savior’s grace is wonderfully strange: “For you were like sheep going astray…”

Pastor’s Challenge:

Do the people who you work with see your life as wonderfully strange?

Do the people you live with see your life as wonderfully strange?

Are you still in love with your wonderfully strange Savior?
