Lessons Learned in 2020

Isaiah 26:3-9 ESV

A Message by | Jen Romine | discipleship pastor | first aired on 12.27.2020

You keep him in perfect peace

whose mind is stayed on you,

because he trusts in you.

Trust in the Lord forever,

for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.

For he has humbled

the inhabitants of the height,

the lofty city.

He lays it low, lays it low to the ground,

casts it to the dust.

The foot tramples it,

the feet of the poor,

the steps of the needy.”

The path of the righteous is level;

you make level the way of the righteous.

In the path of your judgments,

O Lord, we wait for you;

your name and remembrance

are the desire of our soul.

My soul yearns for you in the night;

my spirit within me earnestly seeks you.

For when your judgments are in the earth,

the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness. —Isaiah 26:3-9

There are lessons we can learn from 2020:

  • God teaches His best lessons through experiences

  • God is teaching us if we but listen

I.

Down

“Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day. You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.” —Dallas Willard

God says “Be still and know that I am God.”

  • We are also mentally busy
  • “We are informationally obese, gorging ourselves on information until we are sick and unhealthy.” —Jefferson Bethke

Your soul will never find rest until it rests in God

Are you becoming more like Jesus by the schedules and practices you are participating in?

II. Control is

God has control of our outer world

  • Life circumstances

WE have control of our inner world

  • Our mind, body and will.

Arrange your environment and attitude so that you are experiencing deep contentment, joy and connectedness in your everyday life with God.

III. We are

to be

We are designed to be in community

The enemy has tried to divide us this year

God gave us real-life relational opportunities during this time

  • Intentional togetherness with those in our households

  • Opportunities to care for our single friends and elderly neighbors

  • Opportunities to identify our “essential workers” and thank them

Our eyes have been opened to be thankful for what we have and opened to see what we take for-granted.

Call to Action:

  1. Slow down enough to take some time and reflect on your experiences in 2020. Ask God what He would have you learn from your experiences.

  2. Surrender to God anything in your inner world that has kept you from a close and intimate relationship with Him.

  3. Look for ways to love those in your life this week.
