Mission Vs. Tradition: Luke 5:33-6:11; 14:1-6
Discern Between
Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days. —Luke 5:34–35
Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? —Luke 6:46
“Methods are many, principles are few, methods may change but principles never do.”
Therefore my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turn to God, —Acts 15:19
…not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another. —1 Cor 4:6
Embrace The
No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’ —Luke 5:36–39
Choose Love Over
Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him? —Luke 6:3–4
The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath. —Luke 6:5
The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. —Mark 2:27
Or have you not read in the Law how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless? I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. And if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. —Matt 12:5–7
“I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” And after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored. —Luke 6:9–10
“Which one of you who has a sheep, if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” —Matt 12:11–12
“Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?” —Luke 14:5
What’s Your Next Step?
• Discern Between Tools & Rules
• Embrace The New God Wants To Do
• Choose Love Over Legalism
Application Questions: What are some examples of tools that could be seen as rules? Why is it so important to discern between the two? What are some of the new things Jesus came to bring? How can we choose love over legalism in our daily lives?
