Wisdom Patterns - Week 2

What do we do with the times when we encounter a challenge to the accepted order of things? When our beliefs are upended, when our routine has been blown up, or the relationships that we thought were forever come to an end? How do we handle it when we face a moment where the right decision is to willingly upset the structured order of our life because we know that things need to change in order to get better? There is a Biblical wisdom for these seasons of life and if we have an ear to hear and eyes to see we can maneuver them with grace and grow through them rather than fall apart in them.


I. It’s just

science.

Matthew 7:13-14 NLT
13“You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. 14 But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.”

A. One of the hardest to accept in your spiritual journey is that the setback you are in the midst of is the thing that will ultimately you into the expansiveness of what God has in store for you.

Romans 8:26-39 MSG
Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good. 29-30God knew what he was doing from the very beginning. He decided from the outset to shape the lives of those who love him along the same lines as the life of his Son. The Son stands first in the line of humanity he restored. We see the original and intended shape of our lives there in him. After God made that decision of what his children should be like, he followed it up by calling people by name. After he called them by name, he set them on a solid basis with himself. And then, after getting them established, he stayed with them to the end, gloriously completing what he had begun.
31-39So, what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose? If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us? And who would dare tangle with God by messing with one of God’s chosen? Who would dare even to point a finger? The One who died for us—who was raised to life for us!—is in the presence of God at this very moment sticking up for us. Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture:
They kill us in cold blood because they hate you.
We’re sitting ducks; they pick us off one by one.
None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.

B. It’s hard to miss the pattern here and in nearly every single story throughout all of scripture including that of Jesus himself, and yet we are particularly good at the things we do not want to see. There is always before there is reorder, it is impossible to skip over it, otherwise you end up with conflicting “truths” piled on top of each other.

II. The of Wisdom.

James 1:2-6 The Voice
2-4 Don’t run from tests and hardships, brothers and sisters. As difficult as they are, you will ultimately find joy in them; if you embrace them, your faith will blossom under pressure and teach you true patience as you endure. And true patience brought on by endurance will equip you to complete the long journey and cross the finish line—mature, complete, and wanting nothing. 5 If you don’t have all the wisdom needed for this journey, then all you have to do is ask God for it; and God will grant all that you need. He gives lavishly and never scolds you for asking. 6 The key is that your request be anchored by your single-minded commitment to God. Those who depend only on their own judgment are like those lost on the seas, carried away by any wave or picked up by any wind. 7 Those adrift on their own wisdom shouldn’t assume the Lord will rescue them or bring them anything. 8 The splinter of divided loyalty shatters your compass and leaves you dizzy and confused.

A. How do you endure in times of disorder? Step one, secure your .
1. Create habits that sure up the anchor lines
- Habit of putting the true word of God in your heart.
- Habit of friendships that point you to God.
- Habit of interrogating your reality and removing things that weaken your anchor lines.

B. Learn how to ask

questions of the right source. Single minded commitment to God does not mean mindless adherence. Growth is not , it is , when you’re in a storm of disorder and chaos questions are a natural reaction, ask them. But in your asking consider the source you are asking to guide you. Do not ask a drowning man to save you from drowning.

C. Let your hope

into faith.

Hebrews 12:11-13 NLT
11 No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way. 12 So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees. 13 Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong.

III. Learn to victories in the midst of the .

A. David was a master of throwing parties to celebrate victories

the battle was even halfway over. The book of psalms is packed with poems of celebration that start with a depressing description of dire circumstances.

B. Paul and Silas threw a victory party in a

cell while in chains.

C. Your valley will not last

, and it’s not too early to God for taking you through it. When you learn to live with this worldview then you can endure trials with all joy.

Ephesians 6:10-14 AMP
In conclusion, be strong in the Lord [draw your strength from Him and be empowered through your union with Him] and in the power of His [boundless] might. 11Put on the full armor of God [for His precepts are like the splendid armor of a heavily-armed soldier], so that you may be able to [successfully] stand up against all the schemes and the strategies and the deceits of the devil. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this [present] darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) places. 13Therefore, put on the complete armor of God, so that you will be able to [successfully] resist and stand your ground in the evil day [of danger], and having done everything [that the crisis demands], to stand firm [in your place, fully prepared, immovable, victorious]. 14So stand firm and hold your ground…
