Have you ever had a family member or friend die? Did that death cause you to question God’s love?

INTRODUCTION

What are some key points that stuck out to you in the video?

READ
Read John 11:21-27
21Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

Did Martha have faith, doubt, or a mixture of both in this passage? How so?

Jesus said, “He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” What kind of life and death was Jesus referring to?

How should Christ’s statement alter our views of life and death?

How is the hope of John 11:25-26 received? (Hint it is mentioned three times in these two verses)

DIVE DEEPER
Read 1 Corinthians 15:12-28

According to Paul, what confidence do we have that Jesus’s words are true and that he can raise the dead as well as the spiritually dead?

In verses 14-19 there are seven things that are true if Christ has not been raised from the dead. What are they?

BIG IDEA
Jesus has the power over death. His resurrection is the basis for the Christian’s resurrection to glory in the future. And we experience the beginnings of that now through our new birth- from death in sin to life in the spirit. Death affects us all and we cannot overcome it. Jesus overcomes our death by his own death and resurrection., calls us out of death and sin by the Holy Spirit into new life with him now and glorified resurrected life with God in the future.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Have you ever felt abandoned by God in a great time of need?

Meditating on the fact that Jesus is the resurrection power and the resurrection life and he dwells within all who believe, how does this change your perspective in life, suffering, and even death?
