The Compassion of Christ: Luke 23

  1. Jesus Took Our Willingly

As they had requested, he released Barabbas, the man in prison for insurrection and murder. But he turned Jesus over to them to do as they wished. —Luke 23:25

He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. —2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB

For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God’s laws. —James 2:10

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. —Romans 6:23

  1. Jesus Gave Generously

Daughters of Jerusalem, don’t weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. —Luke 23:28

Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing. —Luke 23:34

Love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. —Luke 6:27–28

He was counted among the rebels. He bore the sins of many and interceded for rebels. —Isaiah 53:12

40 But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? 41 We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” 43 And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” —Luke 23:40–43

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. —Ephesians 2:8–9 NASB

44 By this time it was about noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. 45 The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle. —Luke 23:44–46

19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. 20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. 21 And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, 22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. —Hebrews 10:19–22

Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last. —Luke 23:46

When the Roman officer overseeing the execution saw what had happened, he worshiped God and said, “Surely this man was innocent.” —Luke 23:47

50 Now there was a good and righteous man named Joseph. He was a member of the Jewish high council, 51 but he had not agreed with the decision and actions of the other religious leaders. He was from the town of Arimathea in Judea, and he was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come. 52 He went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. —Luke 23:50–52
