I. Introduction
Read Scripture
4 He had to go through Samaria on the way. 5 Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. 7 Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” 8 He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.9 The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”
10 Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”
11 “But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? 12 And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?”
13 Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. 14 But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” —John 4:4-14
A. Advent Season has begun—The Coming of the Promised one
B. Why is Advent a good thing for the church?
- Aligns our focus on Jesus
- Gives us perspective
- Gives us hope in the midst of hopelessness
- Gives us peace in the midst of tension and stress
- Gives us a heart of thankfulness
C. The birth of Jesus is the ultimate example of love in action
1.I John 4:9-10—“This is how God showed his love among us; he sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”
a. The key point—He loved us perfectly even when we did not love him.
D. Christmas is the answer to our dilemma
- Romans 3:23—All Have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God
- Romans 6:23—the Wages of Sin is death but the gift of God is eternal through Jesus
We have a disease that we cannot heal by ourselves
a. Sinful Nature
Jesus came to earth because He was and is the only who can heal us and save us from ourselves.
E. Let’s look at his greatest gift of all—Salvation
II. Three Important Lessons from this Story
A. Jesus
All of Us
- Who is this woman that Jesus engages?
a. A Samaritan, this group was half Jewish and half Assyrian
- OT history—the northern half of Israel (the ten tribes and King Rehoboam I Kings 12) were over taken by the Assyrians around 720BC
- They were assimilated into the Assyrian culture
- They intermarried which produced the Samaritans of Jesus day
b. They were hated by the Jews because they intermarried which was forbidden in Dt. 7:3-5
c. They were hated because they continually engaged the Jewish people after they rebuilt Jerusalem- Women were seen as second class to males and were not invited to the table of men
- Jesus goes against the culture of the day
a. He engages her regardless of the prohibition written and unwritten.- V. 9—She is surprised by Jesus’ engagement
- V.16-17—Jesus gets to the intimate points of this life
a. You don’t have one husband but many husbands- Jesus’ engagement says the following:
a. You are valuable
b. I see you, know you and love you
c. I will move you toward healing
d. You are more than your sin- John 3:16—God so loved the world (everyone) that he gave his one and only son…
- Question—Can you see yourself in this woman?
a. He sees you and knows you
b. He loves you regardless of the dirt
c. You are important
d. He wants to move you toward healing and purpose
e. Some believe that this gospel stuff is good for others but I am on the outside looking in- Key Point—Jesus is willing to engage you today regardless of your situation
B. Jesus
All of Us a Gift
V.10—Jesus is ready to give the lady an eternal gift of living water
V.11-12—She doesn’t understand what he is offering her
a. She was thinking about the physical gift of water
b. Jesus was offering her spiritual water, a relationship with God and through HimV.13-14—Jesus presses on to explain to her about this gift.
Question—How often do we settle for less than what Jesus has for us?
a. We misunderstand
b. We focus on our physical needs in exclusion of our spiritual needsV.15—she is ready for the gift but doesn’t understand that she needs forgiveness
a. V. 16—She reveals her heart in her relationships with men
b. Jesus defines the problem in her lifeToday, the greatest challenge is that people don’t believe that they need the gift that Jesus offers
a. Romans 5:12—When Adam sinned, sin entered the world…so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.
Jesus wants everyone to have this gift—salvation
a. John 1:12—to everyone who receives him, he gives the right to become a child of God
Two groups here today
a. Those who have received this gift
b. Those who have notIf you have received it then:
a. Remember, value and appreciate it
If you have not, then:
a. Ask for this gift now
b. Muslims did it all the timeKey Point—Jesus is offering the gift of salvation to everyone
C. Jesus
that He is the Messiah
Many theologians argue about what is called the Messiah secret but this passage clearly shows that Jesus made the declaration that he was in fact the Messiah
V. 26—Jesus told her, “I am the Messiah”
a. She was asking in verse 25 when the Messiah would come.
Biblical verses where Jesus declared he was the Messiah or the Son of God
a. John 10:36
b. John 11:4
c. Luke 22:70
d. Matthew 16:15-17This is the million-dollar question–is Jesus the Son of God?
a. Jesus is either a liar, lunatic or Lord
A problem that many had in that day and we have today is what we mean by Messiah
a. They believed Messiah was a physical king who would rule their nation
b. We believe Messiah is anything that we construct that will fit our narrative. Thus we have to throw out the bibleChristmas is an amazing story of God coming to the earth in the form of baby but many still view him as a baby
What do we learn from the woman?
a. She believed he was the Messiah
b. V.39-42—She went to her village and told her story and many believed her and then encountered Jesus for themselves and believed.
c. We must tell our story about
- Where did you come from?
- How did you encounter Him?
- How has He changed you?
Question—If you truly believe Jesus is the Son the God and the Messiah, what does it demand of you?
a. Your LIFE
This Christmas give him back the greatest gift that you can give—Your LIFE
10. Key Point—Jesus is the Messiah, let’s surrender and begin to live
III. Call to Action
1. Admit your need to Jesus today
2. Ask Him to take over every area of your life
