FAITHFUL SAYINGS

Text: 1 Tim. 1:15; 4:7-9; 2 Tim. 2:11-13

1 Tim. 1:15
15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

1 Tim. 4:7-9
7 But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. 8 For bodily exercise profiteth little : but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come . 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.

2 Tim. 2:11-13
11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: 12 If we suffer , we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: 13 If we believe not , yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

1. Jesus Saves Sinners! (1 Tim. 1:15)

  • This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation – Jesus came into this world to save sinners.
  • Do you know what that means?
    1) Jesus paid the sinner’s

    .
    2) Jesus provided for the saint’s .

  • Paul’s salvation was a pattern and example of what? Of a radical transformation.

  • Paul is a pattern for whom? For those who would believe.
  • On the spectrum of salvation there are two extremes: those who believe or think they are too to be saved, and those who believe they are enough and don’t need to be saved, or believe that because of such they have earned their salvation.

2. Godliness Is Profitable (1 Tim. 4:7b-9)

  • When we do our part in terms of spiritual exercise, then God can do in us supernaturally what we could never do on our own: transform us, change us, renew us, etc.

  • Godliness has

in this life and the one to come.

3. Suffering Leads To Reigning (2 Tim. 2:11-13)

  • Paul lays out a couple of paradoxes in these verses: death leads to life; suffering leads to reigning.
  • One is because of our

. The other is because of our
    .

  • Suffering in life can be for the

of Christ or as a result of the of Christ. (2 Tim. 3:12; Rom. 8:28)

  • Suffering tests our faith and faithfulness in two ways: personally and publically. Will we accept and acknowledge God or deny Him? (cf. 2 Tim. 2:12)
  • Suffering comes in many forms: persecution, problems, trials, temptations, etc.

  • Question: Are we ready to suffer? Whether it be for the cause of Christ or as a part of the plan of Christ?

  • Why endure hardness and suffering and persecution, etc.? Because if we do we have the promise of reigning with Him.

Bottom line: These are faithful sayings…
