GOD SANCTIFIES ME

1. The Definition Of Sanctification

1) General: To be sanctified is to be

(in particular for God).

  • The word “sanctified” comes from the same root word from which we get the words , separation, and saint (meaning separated one).

2) Theological: Sanctification is the act of God whereby the believing sinner is set apart

sin (its penalty at salvation, its power in our lives, and its presence in eternity) and God, Christ, and righteousness.

2. The Types Of Sanctification

1)

Sanctification. This occurs at the moment of salvation to set us apart from sin’s penalty. (1 Cor. 1:2; Acts 26:18; 1 Cor. 6:11; Heb. 2:11, 10:10; 1 Pet. 1:2)

2)

Sanctification. This occurs throughout life to set us apart from sin’s power. (1 Thess. 4:3-4; 2 Tim. 2:21)

3)

Sanctification. This occurs at the rapture (or resurrection) to set us apart from sin’s presence. (Eph. 5:25-27; 1 Thess. 5:23)

3. The Distinction Of Sanctification

  • Sanctification is distinct from Justification:

Justification

1) Occurs instantly at the moment of salvation changing our standing before God.

2) Removes the

of sin.

3) Removes the

of sin.

4)

us righteous.

Sanctification

1) Occurs gradually throughout the life of the believer changing our condition here.

2) Removes the

of sin.

3) Removes the

of sin.

4)

us righteous.

4. The Steps Of Sanctification

1) Know (Rom. 6:1-10)

2) Reckon (Rom. 6:11)

  • There is a to apply.
  • We must reckon, or personally and fully accept, and receive this truth in our hearts as true for us individually and act upon these facts.

  • Reckoning is acting on faith what you know is a fact.

  • Just as the lost must personally accept by faith the truth of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ for their salvation, we must accept as personally true that are indeed dead to sin and alive in Christ to righteousness, that the life of Christ now indwells us and empowers us for sanctification and spiritual victory.

3) Yield (Rom. 6:12-16)

  • There is a

    to fulfill.

  • We must not yield to sin. Sin no longer has dominion or control over us. There is no longer any need for us to allow it to conquer us. It does not control us. Sin only dominates us when we yield to it. We must never believe the lie that we cannot walk in victory!

4) Obey (Rom. 6:16)

  • Once we know who we are in Christ, once we have personally reckoned and accepted this as truth personally, once we have chosen to yield ourselves to God, now we are and to obey God.
  • How are we able to obey God? By the power of the Holy Spirit (new nature, new mindset, new power source). We can’t obey God in our own strength, but we can by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Rom. 8:2)
