Preparing For Trials: Luke 22

1 . Request

Beforehand

Pray that you will not give in to temptation. —Luke 22:40

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. —Matthew 6:13 NIV

with prayer.

Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it. And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure. —James 4:2–3

“There are things God plans to do through no other means but prayer.” —Bill Elliff

He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood. —Luke 22:44

2 . Relinquish My

Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done. —Luke 22:42 NIV

3 . Recognize My

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.” Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you.” But Jesus said, “Peter, let me tell you something. Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.” —Luke 22:31–34
“In this world the kings and great men lord it over their people, yet they are called ‘friends of the people.’ But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant. Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves. —Luke 22:25–27

Greatness comes from

, not status.

4 . Remember Christ’s

The Lord’s Supper helps us remember the Lord’s

.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. —Hebrews 12:1–2a NIV

For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. —Hebrews 12:2b-3 NIV

But from now on the Son of Man will be seated in the place of power at God’s right hand. —Luke 22:69

“If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him.” —C.T. Studd

Jesus ran for you, now

for Him.

He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. —Luke 22:19

After supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you. —Luke 22:20
