I. Introduction

Read Scripture

30 As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and almost before Jacob had left his father, Esau returned from his hunt. 31 Esau prepared a delicious meal and brought it to his father. Then he said, “Sit up, my father, and eat my wild game so you can give me your blessing.”

32 But Isaac asked him, “Who are you?”

Esau replied, “It’s your son, your firstborn son, Esau.”

33 Isaac began to tremble uncontrollably and said, “Then who just served me wild game? I have already eaten it, and I blessed him just before you came. And yes, that blessing must stand!”

34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he let out a loud and bitter cry. “Oh my father, what about me? Bless me, too!” he begged.

35 But Isaac said, “Your brother was here, and he tricked me. He has taken away your blessing.”

36 Esau exclaimed, “No wonder his name is Jacob, for now he has cheated me twice. First he took my rights as the firstborn, and now he has stolen my blessing. Oh, haven’t you saved even one blessing for me?”

37 Isaac said to Esau, “I have made Jacob your master and have declared that all his brothers will be his servants. I have guaranteed him an abundance of grain and wine—what is left for me to give you, my son?”

38 Esau pleaded, “But do you have only one blessing? Oh my father, bless me, too!” Then Esau broke down and wept.

39 Finally, his father, Isaac, said to him,

“You will live away from the richness of the earth,

and away from the dew of the heaven above.

40 You will live by your sword,

and you will serve your brother.

But when you decide to break free,

you will shake his yoke from your neck.” —Genesis 27:30-40

A. We live a day where 40% of our children are being raised without their biological father and depending upon your ethnic background the percentage goes even higher.

  1. Fatherlessness is an epidemic in our society

a. Abandonment
b. Present but not there emotionally

B. The consequence of this dilemma is that many seek out pseudo fatherhood influences

  1. Gangs or various groups

  2. Work or accomplishments

C. Malachi 4:6—The prophet declared that the land would be cursed unless the Fathers’ heart are not turned toward their children.

  • We are experiencing a similar curse today in our country because of the absence and the blessing of our fathers

D. There are various groups here today as it relates to our fathers

  1. Fatherless upbringing
  2. Father present physically but not emotionally or spiritually
  3. Father who passed off the spiritual blessing unto their children

E. The point of this passage is simply a son begging for his father’s blessing

  1. I believe whatever group you find yourself in today that we all have his place in our heart that is crying out for the blessing of our father

  2. You may be an adult and older yet your heart still cries out as it did when you were 9 years old for your father’s blessing

  3. Your father may have passed away, your father may not be a believer and you may think that the blessing is not possible

F. The definition of blessing

  1. Hebrew word for blessing is Barak

    • To accept and approve
  2. This passage defines what blessing is

    a. Simply passing the covenant of God to the next generation
b.The divine stamp passed on to the next generation

  3. Gen 12:1-3—Abrahamic covenant passed off to Isaac, Isaac to his sons

    • Esau cried out for this blessing
  4. We pass things forward in the form of a will

    • This is greater than a will, it is the blessing of God upon the next generation

II. Three Items to Note from this Story

A. Jacob

the Blessing

  1. Gen 25:28—Isaac loved Esau because he was a hunter, Rebekah loved Jacob because he stayed home and cooked

    • Favoritism in a family has terrible consequences
  2. Gen. 27:1-4—Isaac is old and blind; he knows his time for his death is upon him

    • He instructs Esau to hunt and prepare his favorite dish before he bestows his blessing upon him
  3. Gen 27:5-11—Rebekah overhears Isaac

    a. She prepares Jacob to receive the blessing and thus deceive Isaac
    b. She dressed Jacob in Esau’s clothes and cooked Isaac’s favorite dish

  4. Isaac is old and can’t see so he is deceived

    a. He says the voice is that of Jacob but everything else is that of Esau
    b. He eats the dish

  5. Gen 27:28-29—He blesses Jacob

    a. He kisses him—an intimate touch
    b. A blessing of abundance of harvest and riches
    c. A blessing of influence—nations serve him and his family serve him
    d. Passes on the Abrahamic covenant

    1. Curse those who curse you
    2. Bless those who bless you
  6. Jacob’s name reveals his character

    • Deceiver
  7. Question — Why would God allow Isaac to bless someone who’s character is so messed up?

    • The passing of the blessing is not the end goal but the starting point
  8. Gen. 32:22-32—Jacob wrestles with God (encounters God) and is transformed and becomes the man that he was always intended to be

    • Name is all changed to Israel

Key Point—The Father’s blessing is for everyone

B. Esau

for the Blessing

  1. Gen 27:34—After Esau and Isaac learned of the deception Esau screams out in a loud and bitter cry:

    • Bless me too, he begged
  2. Many who can hear my voice have been begging your entire life for the father’s blessing even though you did not know it

    • Crying out in so many ways to have that acceptance and approval
  3. Why did God allow Jacob to get the blessing?

    a. Gen. 25:27—Esau sold his birth rite for food
    b. Esau was more concerned with his immediate needs than the future blessings

  4. Esau despised his brother

    • Hebrews 12:16-17—Esau was about the present needs
  5. Today, we have many fathers only concerned with meeting their immediate needs

    a. Physically
    b. Financially
    c. Relationally

  6. Verbal blessings or promises could not be broken

    a. Matthew 537—Jesus challenged us to live such a life of integrity

    • Let your yes be yes and your no be no
  7. Gen 27:40—Isaac gives Esau a lesser blessing

    • Simply, he will be free one day from Jacob’s deception

Key Point—Never settle for less than God’s best

C. You were

for the Blessing

  1. Galatians 3:6-9—All those who believe are children of Abraham

    a. We are blessed to bless
    b. Genesis 15:5 is fulfilled in you, you are the stars in the sky that God told Abraham

  2. The challenge that we (the church) face today is that there are too many to count who have never had the spiritual blessing of the father passed on to them.

  3. Many of us received the most important blessing of “Abba” Father from heaven

  4. Yet, there is still a desire for approval and acceptance from our father

  5. Personal example from my relationship with my dad

    a. Photos of the men that God brought into my life to bestow that blessing in my life

    1. We believe in you
    2. We cheer you on
    3. We pray for you
    4. We are here for you
    5. We love you
  6. There are consequences if you have never received the Father’s blessing

    a. Working for the approval—the accomplishments will never suffice
    b. Working for significance

Key Point—The result of the Father’s blessing is

Healing
Freedom

III. Call to Action

1. Come forward to Receive the Father’s Blessing
2. If you are a Father—Extent the Blessing to your children
3. Pray for the Holy Spirit to mature in you in Jesus
