Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

Let Your Light Shine | Allen Pontarelli | Local Outreach Pastor | first aired on 11.27.2022

Read Scripture
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. - Matthew 5:14-16

I. “You Are the

of the World”

• Matthew 5 introduces The Beatitudes and sets the stage for Jesus famous Sermon on the Mount.
• The Beatitudes depict the ideal heart condition of a Citizen of God’s Eternal Kingdom. Jesus is teaching us what it looks like to live a Kingdom Life. (Blesses are the meek, the poor, Etc.)
• Immediately following the Beatitudes, Jesus declares 2 powerful identity statements regarding those that would be a part of His kingdom.

II. “People of Light don’t hide it – They don’t cover it up – They put it up on a

for people to see.”

III. “Let your light shine before men, that they may

your good deeds and Praise your Father in heaven”

IV. Are you letting your light shine in such a way that people see your

(not just doing, but being) and then praise your Father in heaven?

Self-Reflection: Are you letting your light shine this way?

• Could someone follow you for the week and know that you were a follower of Jesus?
• Good deeds are more than just actions. They are everything we do to represent Jesus.
• Do people glorify you for your actions, or do you point them back to Jesus?
• If we are honest with each other this idea is much easier to say than to actually live out each and every day. This is very hard to do!

V. 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. - Matthew 16:24-25 NIV

VI. “God Asks us to do only what He is

to do Himself.”

• God is willing to give up His one and Only Son (John 3:16)
• Jesus surrenders everything to be obedient to His Father (Philippians 2:5-8)

VII. Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. - Philippians 2:9-11
