Rom 3:24 (KJV)
Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Gal 3:13 (KJV)
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Rev 5:9 (KJV)
And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
1. The Definition Of Redemption
1) Simple: To buy
2) Theological: Redemption in terms of salvation is God
2. The Need Of Redemption (Isa. 52:3, cf: Heb. 2:6-9)
- When Adam sinned, he sold mankind into a great sin debt which no man was able to pay. He thereby lost his inheritance and name as a son of God. Man and the creation over which he had dominion were sold into and cursed by
- Man could never repay this debt himself. He had the need of redemption and the need of someone else to redeem him.
3. The Prefiguring Of Redemption
1) The
- The command of the Kinsman Redeemer provided for the restoration of inherited family property that had been sold off due to debt which the owner could not pay. The purpose of this commandment was to preserve family and tribal land allotment inheritance in Israel.
2) The Levirate
- The commandment of the Levirate Marriage provided for the continuation of a family name which would otherwise end when a father died with no children.
4. The Picture Of Redemption (Ruth 1-4)
- The story of Ruth is a wonderful picture of redemption. Her marriage to Boaz illustrates the fulfillment of both of the above commandments (kinsman redeemer and levirate marriage). Boaz was a near kinsman who married Ruth both to redeem the lands of her family which had been sold off due to a debt they could not pay and to raise up the name of Ruth’s first husband (who had died with no heirs).
5. The Person Of Redemption
- The Redeemer was one who paid a debt he did not
- There were three prerequisites for the Redeemer:
1) The Redeemer had to be a
2) The Redeemer had to be
3) The Redeemer had to be
- There was a nearer kinsman to Ruth than Boaz, but he wasn’t willing to pay.
- Jesus was willing to lay His life down as a sacrifice for the sins of man. (Heb. 10:4-10, John 10:11, 17, 18)
6. The Depth Of Redemption
- When the debt was great enough, not only was the debtor’s property sold off, but also they themselves were sold as a
1) Ransom
- The Redeemer must first pay the ransom
- Christ paid the price of our sin. (Heb. 9:12)
2) Removal (Gal. 3:13)
The Redeemer could then choose to remove the redeemed from the slave market forever. This was exagorazo (Gr.), i.e. to purchase “out of the market.” Exagorazo meant that a slave was bought and removed from all future sales.
This slave could never be sold as a slave to any other master, for they were the permanent property of their new master, who assumed all responsibility for their care.
3) Release
- The Redeemer could choose to purchase a slave for the purpose of setting him
- Jesus has paid the debt of our sin, removed us from the slave market forever, and set us free. (Rom. 3:24, John 8:31-36)
4)
- Not only did God pay the price of our redemption with the blood of His Own Son; not only did He guarantee our eternal life by removing us from the slave market forever; and not only did He set us free from slavery forever; He also adopted us as His Own SONS and made us joint-heirs with Christ! We have been redeemed and received the Spirit of Adoption. (Gal. 4:3-7; Rom. 8:14-17)
7. A Misunderstanding Of Redemption
- Our ransom from sin does
- The death of Christ was to satisfy God’s holy demands for the just punishment of sin. Jesus was not offered as a sacrifice to Satan. His death was a sacrifice to God. God never owed Satan anything nor paid Satan anything!
8. The Blessings Of Redemption
1) We are justified by His grace. (Rom. 3:24)
2) We are set free from the curse of the Law. (Gal. 3:13)
3) Our sins are forgiven. (Eph. 1:7, Col. 1:14)
4) We have a divine inheritance. (Eph. 1:14)
5) Our conscience is purged from dead works to serve the living God. (Heb. 9:12-14)
6) Our life is redeemed from destruction. (Ps. 103:4)
7) We are redeemed from the corruption of our bodies. (Rom. 8:23)
9. The Day Of Redemption
- The rapture is our coming great day of Redemption when we will be redeemed from the corruption of our bodies and will experience our resurrection and glorification, forever removing the sting of death. (Eph. 4:30, 1 Cor. 15:51-55)
10. The Responsibility Of The Redeemed
1) To
2) To reveal (1 Cor. 6:20)
3) To
