The Gospel of John: Chapter 7

Jesus the Source of Security and the Water for Life

37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.’—John 7:37-38

(1.) Jesus is the source of your security and the provider for your needs
(2.) Earthly things will never quench the thirst of the spirit
(3.) Only Jesus Christ can quench the thirst of your spirit

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.” —1 John 2:15-16

6 Those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches? 7 No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them— 8 the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough— 9 so that they should live on forever and not see decay.” —Psalms 49:6-9

3 Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save.” —Psalms 146:3

4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.” —1 Peter 5:4

2 All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord.” —Proverbs 16:2

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” —Proverbs 3:5

26 Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.” —Proverbs 28:26

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” —Psalms 46:1

25 Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.” —Proverbs 29:25

25 O Lord, do save, we beseech Thee; O Lord, do send prosperity.” —Psalms 118:25

3 With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.” —Isaiah 12:3

1 Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread? … Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.” —Isaiah 55:1-2

37 If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.” —John 7:37

(1.) Recognize and Admit Our Thirst

15 ‘Sir,’ the woman said, ‘give me that water! Then I will never be thirsty again.’” —John 4:15

1 O God… My whole being desires you; like a dry, worn-out , and waterless land, my soul is thirsty for you.” —Psalm 63:1

(2.) Reject and Stop Drinking the Things Which Do Not Satisfy

19 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” —Matthew 6:19

7 Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.” —Isaiah 55:7

(3.) Quench Our Thirst with Receiving Jesus

28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” —Matthew 11:28

14 Anyone who drinks the water that I give will never thirst; indeed, the water that I give them will become a spring welling up to eternal life.” —John 4:14

15 he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. 16 ‘Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst.’” —Revelation 7:15-16

6 Seek the Lord while he wills to be found, call upon him while he is near.” —Isaiah 55:6
