DAY 6: Friday, April 28th
SALT AND LIGHT
READ
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:13-16)
DEVOTIONAL
I love that Jesus spoke with very simple images. It makes it easier for us to understand. And here the thought is simple. What is the purpose of salt? To make things salty. And what is the purpose of light? To shine light. Jesus is obviously using this to teach His followers something. He is teaching them that just like salt and light have a clear purpose, so too do His followers. So it begs the question, what is the purpose of the Christian life? We are to be like Christ. We are to shine the light of Jesus. And Jesus tells us how we are to do this, we are to live in such a way that people see our good works. But we aren’t to do this in such a way that brings attention to ourselves. No, our good works should be done in such a way that it brings attention to who God is and it would lead others to give glory to Him. All the work that we’ve done this week has been for Him. It’s been so that people can see the kind of God we serve and they can look to Him, maybe even trust Him as Savior. We have just a little bit of time left today and let’s use it to be the light of Christ, to do good, and let God be glorified.
PRAYER
Take a moment today to ask God, on this last day we are here, to continue to work through us. Ask Him so show you different ways that He has used you this week to be salt and light.
QUESTION
In what ways has God used you to be a light this week in Jamaica? In what ways have you seen others glorify God because of His work in you?
