Don't Just Stand There, Do Something
Luke 10:25-37

Did you ever think that you would hear the news that Roe v. Wade had been overturned?

• This morning, we want the words of Jesus to compel us into the next era of fighting for life.
• We don’t just want abortion to be illegal. We want abortion to be unthinkable and unnecessary.
• Two primary motivations for this message today:

// How do we make the case for life?
// How can we respond to this decision as a church?

Guide the Conversation (Luke 10:25-29)

• Christians, take a cue from Jesus. You don’t have to answer every question, engage in every argument, or give a response to every person who makes an assertion. But when you do, make sure that you engage in the right argument, answer the right question, and do so with logic and reason.
• Greg Koukl calls this the “Columbo,” named after the old TV detective. He says, “The key to the Columbo tactic is to go on the offensive in an inoffensive way by using carefully selected questions to productively advance the conversation. Simply put, never make a statement, at least at first, when a question will do the job.”
• Because most people only make assertions, or unjustified statements that they have seen on social media or the news, asking questions engages people in thoughtful discussion. People are going to make many assertions about abortion that you could respond to:

// “Roe was settled law.” Has the Supreme Court ever made bad decisions that they have later overturned? Yes they have. Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood invalidated state restrictions on abortion by engaging in flawed logic and now-antiquated medical knowledge to make the case for abortion rights. Thankfully, the Supreme Court has a history of overturning its own past cases when they were built on bad logic. Thank God that the 14th Amendment overturned the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision that said black people could not be citizens of the United States and that Brown v. Board of education overturned segregation in schools. Far from making abortion illegal, the Dobbs decision released Friday overturned Roe to send the decision of abortion back to the states.
// “Outlawing abortion will kill women. Banning abortion doesn’t keep women from having abortions, it just keeps women from having safe abortions, especially women in underprivileged communities.” It is true that women in underprivileged situations are often the targets for abortion clinics. So, what I hear you saying is that the world needs less black and hispanic people? Abortion does kill women – unborn women. A mother dying during abortion, even before Roe v. Wade, was rare. Any woman dying during abortion is a tragedy, but just because some people die while seeking to intentionally take the life of a child doesn’t mean we should make it safer and legal.
// “Abortion is healthcare.” What is the purpose of healthcare? The purpose of healthcare is to heal or preserve life. Abortion is not healthcare because pregnancy is not a disease. Abortion is not healthcare because it ends life.

The real question is: Is it wrong to intentionally kill an innocent human being? Does abortion intentionally kill an innocent human being?

Everyone Can Do Something (Luke 10:30-37)

• Far from being the problem in history, true Christian principles embraced and lived out on a daily basis in the home, in the community, and on a national level have been the solution and the path to enriching life
• What I am challenging you to be a part of is a legitimate response to the problem.

// Could you be a foster or adoptive parent?
// Contribute to adoption funds.
// Most foster families quit after the first year. What if they felt such immense support from local churches that they were fueled to continue?
