Sermon Title: Genesis | Part 24: Selling Your Soul
Scripture: Genesis 25:19-34
Speaker: Pastor Mark Pospisil

Questions:

  1. How do “sibling rivalries” affect a family, from your observations and/or experiences?

  2. What are some specific areas in life today where we want instant results—where we feel like waiting is just not acceptable? How do people “sell-out” when it comes to things instantly?

  3. As Pastor Mark taught us, the birthright sought by Jacob came from the way sons would inherit the father’s estate. For example, if there were two sons, the estate would be divided by 3; the older son getting two thirds, the younger one third. It also meant that upon the death of the father, the oldest son would assume the role of the family’s spiritual leader. Assuming he was aware of these facts, why do you think that Esau would be so willing to trade this for a bowl of soup?

  4. Jacob’s name meant “one who grabs the heel,” referring to Jacob’s activity when he was born. His name also means “he cheats” or “deceiver.” Was Jacob being deceitful with the deal he proposed to Esau? What does Genesis 25:34 end with, Jacob or Esau’s actions?

  5. Look at Hebrews 12:15-17. How would you describe Esau’s heart attitude as revealed by his agreement to sell off his birthright? What does Hebrews compare Esau’s action with?

  6. Another understanding of profane is “to make common or ordinary.” What are ways that we take the truths of God or the gifts from God and “make them common or ordinary?” In what ways do people “sell out?”
