THE PURPOSE OF THE PLAGUES
TEXT: EXODUS 7:5
Dr. David L. Sampson
The Ten Strikes Symbolizes Two Important Characteristics of God:
1. The STRIKES are a symbol of God’s _SALVATION_of Israel
2. The STRIKES are a sign of God’s
God’s objective in striking Egypt is a direct answer to Pharaoh’s question
Exodus 5:2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.
But even beyond God’s Retribution—we must note God’s
- Exodus 3:20 And I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof: and after that he will let you go.
- Exodus 7:5 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch forth mine hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.
- Exodus 7:17 Thus saith the LORD, In this thou shalt know that I am the LORD: behold, I will smite with the rod that is in mine hand upon the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood.
- Exodus 9:14 For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth.
- Paul says in Romans 9:17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
The Ten Strikes/Plagues of God:
1. God is
Over All Things.
The Sovereignty of God simply affirms that God is the Supreme Ruler over all creation and the affairs of mankind.
• 1 Chronicles 29:11-13 Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all. Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.
• Psalm 115:3 But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.
• Psalm 103:19 The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.
