The Gospel According To Moses #10

Humility Lessons From Jesus

Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
—Matthew 11:28-30 (NRSV)

Lessons On Humility:

1. It’s About

.

  • When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant. But Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them.
    —Matthew 20:24-25 (NLT)

  • But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
    —Matthew 20:26-28 (NLT)

2. It’s About

.

  • About that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?” Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.
    —Matthew 18:1-4 (NLT)

3. It’s About

.

  • A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
    —Luke 22:24-27 (NIV)

  • Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
    —John 13:3-5 (NLT)

  • After washing their feet he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing? You call me ‘Master’ and ‘Lord,’ and you do well to say it, for it is true. And since I, the Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow: do as I have done to you… You know these things—now do them! That is the path of blessing. —John 13:12-17 (TLB)

Riverside Info Texting System

At Riverside we aren’t terribly organized- in fact we’re sort of the poster church for “disorganized religion”. So we use a “text for information” system where how much info you get is controlled by you. You will never have someone call you without asking for a call. If you can’t find the info you need or have more questions or need some help reach out to one of the pastors directly- if we don’t answer try texting or emailing us and we may get your message sooner.
