Matthew 6:19-34

“Science and industry have so increased both the tempo and violence of living…There is, then, the feeling that we live in a time of unusual insecurity. In the past hundred years so many long-established traditions have broken down – traditions of family and social life, of government, of the economic order, and of religious belief. As the years go by, there seem to be fewer and fewer rocks to which we can hold, fewer things which we can regard as absolutely right and true, and fixed for all time.” —Alan Watts

Matthew 6:19-21
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 13:44-46
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, 46 and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

Choosing the treasure.

Whatever you treasure you .

Matthew 6:22-24
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

Psalm 119:101-105
101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way,
That I may keep Your word.
102 I have not turned aside from Your ordinances,
For You Yourself have taught me.
103 How sweet are Your words to my taste!
Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 From Your precepts I get understanding;
Therefore I hate every false way.
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.

John 14:15
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

John 8:44
44 You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Treasuring poorly leads to and treasuring the better leads to .

Matthew 6:25-32
25 “For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? 28 And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, 29 yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! 31 Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

Matthew 11:28-30
28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Loving Christ is a treasure worth .

Matthew 6:33,34
33 But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
34 “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Matthew 5:6
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Psalm 18:1,2
1“I love You, O LORD, my strength.”
2The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

The 5 treasures that we can hold onto that drive us to perform and pull us away from the “better treasure of Christ.

Self Righteousness
- Motivation: To gain God’s Approval by my good works
- Lie: My good works are good enough for God to love me and to bless me
- Truth: No one is righteous, and we must submit to God’s righteousness
Romans 3:10
10 as it is written,
“There is none righteous, not even one;

Self Justification
- Motivation: To gain God’s peace by excusing my sinful heart and actions
- Lie: I have a good excuse for my actions; therefore, God will see it my way.
- Truth: I have peace with God through justification by faith
Romans 5:1
5 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Self-Reliance
- Motivation: To acquire God’s love by trying harder
- Lie: If I try harder and work harder, God will love me.
- Truth: God’s love is unconditional, and His grace is sufficient
2 Corinthians 12:9
9 And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast [a]about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

Self-Pity
- Motivation: To show disagreement with God in how He treats me
- Lie: In feeling sorry for myself, God will see my suffering and make things better.
- Truth: My life is not my own. God will do with it what He wants
Galatians 2:20
20 I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

Self-Esteem
- Motivation: To gain God’s acceptance by building up my worth and value
- Lie: If I feel good about myself, then God will feel good about me.
- Truth: There is nothing good in me. My value is in Christ
Luke 12:7
7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.

Romans 5:8
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Getting to Know You

1.What is the first car or item that you purchased that you treasured?

Going Deeper

1.Matthew 6:33 tells us to “continually” seek His Kingdom and His righteousness. How do we seek His Kingdom? What does it mean to seek His righteousness?

2.What happens when we treasure the wrong things? How can this produce anxiety?

Matthew 23:23
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.

3.Read Matthew 23:23, Jesus gives a warning to the pharisees and draws a distinction between rule-based faith and relational faith. What are ways that we can slip into rule-based Christianity? How is relational Christianity different?
