INTRODUCTION: Have you been able to add the names of God we’ve studied so far in this sermon series (Elohim, Yahweh/Jehovah, and Adonai) into your prayer vocabulary?
READ: Genesis 14
DISCUSS
1. Have you previously heard a sermon on (or studied) these verses in Genesis about Melchizedek? How familiar were you with him ahead of this sermon?
2. After the battle between the regional kings, Abram mobilized his 318 trained men to get Lot back. How does that strike you? Can you relate to that level of passion and protectiveness for your family or friends?
3. Pastor Robert said that we should think of El ‘Elyon (“God Most High”) not spatially but relationally. What do you think the implications of thinking about this name of God spacially can be?
4. Do you treat God as The Most High relationally? What would doing so look like?
5. Where are you tempted to compromise for lesser blessings (“crumbs”) from the higher-ups of this world?
6. Do you feel like you need to make an oath to The Most High God (or renew an old oath)? E.g. I promise I will wait for God’s best, and not settle for what the world offers.
PRAY
Lord, you are The Most High. All of Earth and life is below your authority. May we live in light of this good news, not settling for the crumbs the higher-ups of this world offer but waiting for your blessings.
