Day 22

KILLING THE SNAKES Garth and LaDonna Harris

“Divorce rate up to 700% in the Bahamas!” What an alarming statement!

According to Family Therapist Dr. Barrington H. Brennen, the divorce rate has sky rocketed to 700% between 1975 with 99 divorces, and 2005 with 609 divorces. The highest age groups for divorce were 35-39 years with a total of 54, and 50 or more years with a total of 113. The amount of couples experiencing divorce after 10-14 years totalled 121, 15-19 years totalled 55 and 20 or more years totalled 123. These were the highest amounts.

The main contributors in his view were ADULTERY, IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES, LACK OF HUMILITY, INSUFFICIENT TIME SPENT TOGETHER AND INEFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION.

He further noted that less locals were getting married compared to tourists. In 2006, a total of 1,731 couples married compared to 2,366 in 2000; a reduction of 635.

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” —Genesis 3:1 NIV

We must be vigilant and ready to fight anything, in any shape or form that opposes our marriage. We are reminded that marriage is like a garden that requires great work for its vitality, sustainability and very existence.

The following are critical to a marriage built on a strong foundation:

• Put God and each other first! Give no root to selfishness.
• Maintain a strong level of communication. Learn what each other needs.
• Avoid keeping secrets which can lead to distrust and dishonesty.
• Apologize quickly especially if you are the offender.
• Show kindness and gratitude often. Appreciate your spouse.
• Show respect both publicly and privately, thereby affirming your spouse.
