Marriage On Mission
4/16/23
The gift of marriage is not just about being in love at first sight. It is a commitment to the Lord, to the person, and to yourself. Our expectations are often built around us being happy all the time. Gary Chapman wrote, “What if God did not design marriage just to make us happy, but to make us holy?” So what do we do when there are unmet expectations, offenses, and hurt feelings?
Marriage is…
-Designed by God (Genesis 1:27-28)
-Sacred/set apart for a special use (Hebrews 13:4)
-A life-long commitment (Ecclesiastes 9:9)
-A mirror of God’s relationship with His people (Isaiah 62:5)
-Intended for companionship and procreation (Genesis 1:28)
-Missional (2 Corinthians 6:14)
Action Points:
How do we become one in God’s Mission for our marriage?
1. Get on our knees together before the Lord and humble ourselves (James 4:10)
“Lord, we don’t have all the answers, but you do. We turn to you in trust and obedience by doing what you want us to do.”
2. Address issues with “I” statements
3. If possible: “Let it go” and forgive one another (Matthew 6:14)
4. Be willing to receive correction (Proverbs 15:31)
5. Be a peacemaker (Matthew 5:9)
6. Don’t be tired of doing good (Galatians 6:9)
7. Examine yourself (John 14:26)
8. Settle matters quickly (Matthew 5:25)
9. Listen (James 1:19)
10. Commit to your mission statement for your marriage
