DAY 19
AFFIRMATION
by Sheree Flowers
There is something about the intimacy of marriage that affirms your positioning in life. Marriage is deemed the 2nd most important relationship that you “choose” to be a part of other than that of a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
When you choose to be with someone, it frames a big part of your identity and as such what is said to you and about you becomes PARAMOUNT.
This is why Affirmation is so important. What is affirmation? The definition of affirmation is the act of confirming something to be true.
Now there is a difference between truth and facts. The fact is we are all broken, but the truth is that we are Redeemed by the Blood of Jesus.
As a partner to your spouse, you are in a position to see all of the facts of who they are, but because you are in such close proximity, you are able to affirm the truth of who they are called to be.
Here are 5 reasons to Affirm your partner.
• To Encourage and Empower - Your words should always be building up your spouse and not tearing them down. It should be done daily, with kindness and a uplifting disposition. *See Hebrews 3:13, Ephesians 4:32, Proverbs 12:25 *
• To Affirm their Strengths. - Help bring out the best in your spouse by affirming their strengths. Be the one who helps build on their strengths, instead of being the one to always point out their weaknesses. See 1 Thessalonians 5:11
• Affirm each other by lifting them up when they are down - Be the safe place that they can come to when the world is beating them to a pulp, do not use be foul and abusive in your words. See Ephesians 4:29
• Let them know that they matter - We all want to know that we matter to someone. Let them know that they matter not only in thought, but words and deeds. See 1 John 3:18, Philippians 2:1-4, 1 Corinthians 16:14
• To Let them know you are there for them - How much more of the world can you conquer if you know that your spouse is there for you? Well then be that same support for your spouse. See Proverbs 12:25, Proverbs 17:17
• There are so many more reasons and opportunities to support and affirm your spouse, but as your grow in the grace and knowledge of God and your partner, you will hopefully become more sensitive to those opportunities.
Prayer:
Lord I thank you that your Word affirms who I am in you and it teaches me how to affirm others. Forgive me for the times my words have torn down and not built up, Help me to see my spouse as you see them and to continually wash them in the Word of Truth as you have called them to be. In Jesus Name Amen.
Reflection:
If your words have not been building your spouse, consider a word fast to limit what comes out of your mouth
While on the word fast seek Truth in God’s Word. Start with the scriptures highligted above.
Write a list of affirmations that you would like to pour into your spouse from your word fast and meditation
Start genuinely affirming your beloved each day.
Come back tomorrow for another installment on our 30 day journey.
