Until Then … Greater Things
March 7, 2021
Chris Seidman, Sr. Minister
John 14:11-14 (NIV)
“Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name and I will do it.”
John 14:11-12 (NIV)
“Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing … .”
John 14:12 (NIV)
“ … and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”
John 16:7-8 (NIV)
“But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.”
John 16:12 (NIV)
“ … because I am going to the Father.”
John 14:13-14 (NIV)
I. “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
Those Words “In His Name” Cause Us To Examine A Couple Of Things In Regard To Our Prayers …
- They cause us to consider the content of what we’re asking for: Is what I’m praying for consistent with the heart of Jesus?
- They also cause us to consider the motive with which we are asking: Am I really asking for this for the sake of His name and God’s glory, or am I asking for this for the sake of my name and glory?
Takeaways:
- When it comes to “Greater Things,” it’s our role to ask, and Jesus’ role to accomplish.
- “Greater Things” are for the purpose of leading to the greatest of things – believing in Jesus as the Son of God.
John 14:11 (NIV)
“Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.”
- “Greater Things call us forward with Jesus into the future, so that we don’t just reminisce about Jesus in the past.
- “Greater Things” are not limited to a few people or a few things.
John 14:12 (NIV)
“… whoever believes in me … .”
- When “Greater Things” don’t come to pass, we must choose to focus on the plot more than the dot.
- When “Greater Things” do come to pass, they say more about Jesus than they do about us.
Communion
Take a moment and give thanks for the greatest work of all – the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ – through which we receive the forgiveness of sins and gift of the Spirit.
- What’s your “whatever” that you’re asking for in His name?
