Day 111 - Jesus is My Friend
Emily Green
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, He may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.” - John 15:12-17 ESV
Writing today’s entry, my mind was brought back to a chapel service when I was in ministry school. One of our pastors was preaching on the friendship of Jesus, and he showed us a YouTube video of a song called “Jesus is My Friend” by Sonseed from the 1970’s. If you know the song, you know that the phrase “Jesus is my friend” sticks with you!
While the song was a fun way to introduce the message that day at chapel, I am thankful for it because it kept my mind meditating on the phrase and fact that Jesus is my friend.
Yes, Jesus is the Son of God (Matthew 3:17). Yes, Jesus is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation 19:16); but He is also our friend. He is the friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24). He is the friend who loves at all times (Proverbs 17:17). He is the friend who forgives (Proverbs 17:9).
It is important to know how mighty and awesome our Jesus is, but it is also important to know how personable and relevant He is to us. He is close, sticking with us through every season. He’s authentic, being the most real friend we’ve ever known. He forgave us more than anyone will ever have to forgive us, and He laid down His life for us, an act that John 15:13 says is the sign of the “greatest love.”
If you’ve never thought about Jesus in this way, I encourage you to see Jesus as your friend today. Talk to Him like a friend, and ask Him to be a part of your day. Listen to what He’s saying to you and thank Him for who He is and what He’s done. Jesus isn’t just our friend; He’s our best friend!
