Acknowledge Your Enemy

When word reached the king of Egypt that the Israelites had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds. “What have we done, letting all those Israelite slaves get away?” they asked. So Pharaoh harnessed his chariot and called up his troops. He took with him 600 of Egypt’s best chariots, along with the rest of the chariots of Egypt, each with its commander. The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, so he chased after the people of Israel, who had left with fists raised in defiance. The Egyptians chased after them with all the forces in Pharaoh’s army—all his horses and chariots, his charioteers, and his troops. The Egyptians caught up with the people of Israel as they were camped beside the shore near Pi-hahiroth, across from Baal-zephon. —Exodus 14:5-9 (NLT)

But…who is our enemy?

  1. Satan, the rebel angel (Eph 2:2; Rev 12:1–12)
  2. Hebrew word that means “adversary” (שָׂטָן)
  3. “the devil” (Matt 4:1, 5; Lk 4:2, 3; Eph 6:11)
  4. “the serpent” (Gen 3:1; 2 Cor 11:3; Rev 20:2)
  5. “the great dragon” (Rev 12:9; cf Rev 20:2)
  6. “the prince of the power of the air” (Eph 2:2)
  7. “the god of this age” (2 Cor 4:4)
  8. “the evil one” (Matt 13:19, 38; Jn 17:15; Eph 6:16)
  9. “the prince of demons” (Matt 9:34; 12:24; Mk 3:22; Lk 11:15)
  10. “the accuser” (Rev 12:10)
  11. “the tempter” (Matt 4:3; 1 Thess 3:5)

Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else. —Ephesians 2:1–3 (NLT)

In the Pauline letters, the word Jesus occurs in 219 verses, the word Lord in 272 verses, and the word Christ in 389 verses. Satan, on the other hand, occurs in only 10 verses, and the word devil in only 6. —Robert J. Morgan. The Red Sea Rules, p. 40)

Look Where You’re Going

Israel could see God…but still wavered

So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. —Ephesians 5:15-17 (NLT)

Go Beyond the Sermon…

All summer, there will be daily devotions to help you take the sermon into your day-to-day life. Keep up through the church app, website, or on our social pages.

Questions to Ponder:

What common characteristics are shared by both the Pharaoh of the Exodus and by the devil?
According to John 10:10, Ephesians 4:37, and 1 Peter 5:8, what does Satan aim to do?
What are you thinking and feeling when you consider the fact you may be under enemy attack?
Hebrews 12:2 tells us to look to Jesus during times of difficulty. What are some practical ways of doing that during your present set of circumstances?
