And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.” Exodus 34:6-7

Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. Matthew 18:23-27

But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. Matthew 18:28-30

When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.” Matthew 18:31-35

QUESTIONS for personal reflection or group discussion

  1. What struck you most about forgiveness in the weekend sermon? When (or with who) do you find it most difficult to forgive? When do you find it easier to forgive?
  2. Please read Psalm 32:5, Romans 3:23-24 and 6:23. What would it mean for you to acknowledge your “debt” to Jesus? Why is acknowledging the debt you owe such an important step on the path to forgiveness?
  3. Please read Psalm 103:1-3. Recall a time when you’ve been overwhelmed by the magnitude of God’s forgiveness. These verses remind us that God forgives ALL our sins. How do you think a person who believes they are fully forgiven by God lives? How could your life reflect God’s forgiveness?
  4. Spend some time thinking about a relationship you have in need of forgiveness. What is the next step you can take today to move towards forgiveness? (Maybe it’s starting to pray that you’ll even want to forgive that person, maybe it’s praying for a heart to see the person as God sees them, maybe it’s time for a letter or text or phone call.) Ask God to give you wisdom to know how best to move forward.
