The Road to Recovery - Part 4
August 20, 2020

Step 6 – Evaluate all my relationships. Offer forgiveness to those who’ve hurt me and make amends for harm I’ve done to others except when to do so would harm them or others.

Ephesians 4:31–32 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, and
anger … along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other,
just as in Christ God forgave you.

Part 1:

WHY?

  1. Because God has forgiven me
Colossians 3:13 Never hold grudges. Remember,
the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. TLB

  2. Because resentment doesn’t work
Job 18:4 You are only hurting yourself with your anger!

  3. Because I need forgiveness in the future
Mark 11:25 When you are praying, first forgive anyone
you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in
heaven will forgive you your sins too. TLB

HOW?

  1. Reveal my hurt
  2. Release my offender
Matthew 18:21–22 How many times should I forgive my
brother when he sins against me? … Jesus answered,
“not seven times, but seventy times seven times!” TLB
  3. Replace my hurt with God’s peace
Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your
 hearts …

Part 2:

WHY?

Hebrews 12:15 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.

HOW?
1.

2. Think how I’d like someone to make amends to me

Luke 6:31 Do to others as you’d have them do to you.

The right

Ecclesiastes 8:6 There is a right time and a right way to do everything. GNB

The right

Ephesians 4:15 Speak the truth in a spirit of love.

The right

Proverbs 12:18 Thoughtless words can wound as deeply as any sword, but wisely spoken words can heal.

3.
Job 11:13–16 “Yet if you devote your heart to him and stretch out your hands to him, if you put away the sin that is in your hand and allow no evil to dwell in your tent, then, free of fault, you will lift up your face; you will stand firm and without fear. You will surely forget your trouble, recalling it only as waters gone by.

RELAPSE –

I. What can cause a relapse?

  1. Zechariah 4:6 Not by might, nor by power, but by my
Spirit, says the Lord … TLB also Galatians 3:3

  2. Galatians 5:7 You were doing so well! Who made you
 stop obeying the truth? GNB

  3. Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 Two are better off than one,
because if one of them falls down, the other can help
him up. But if someone is alone and falls, it’s just too
bad, because there is no one to help him. TLB
 also Hebrews 10:25

  4. Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction. TLB
 also 1 Corinthians 10:12

II. How to prevent a relapse:

Step 7 – Reserve a daily time with God for
 self-examination, Bible reading, and prayer
in order to know God and His will for my life and gain the power to do it.

Mark 14:38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into
temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.

  1. 2 Corinthians 13:5 Check up on yourselves… .TLB

Lamentations 3:40 Let us examine ourselves … and
 let us repent. TLB
    What to evaluate:
    Physical
    Emotional
    Relational
    Spiritual
Galatians 6:4 Each one should test his own actions.
Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing
 himself to somebody else.

  2. Psalm 1:1–3 Happy are those who … are always
meditating on God’s laws and thinking about ways to
follow him more closely. They are like trees along a river
…that do not dry up. They succeed in everything they
    do.

Psalm 119:11 I have thought much about your words
and stored them in my heart so that they would hold me
 back from sin. TLB

Meditation is applying God’s Word to my life. God did not give us His Word to increase our
Knowledge, but to change our lives.
