Spiderman - Message Study Questions

Message Summary

The theme for Spiderman is, with great power comes great responsibility. The theme for
Christians is the gospel message. All have sinned and are sentenced to death—the bad news. But Christ died to pay the price for our sins. And through faith in Him, we are freed from death to life. This is the Good News! This is everything, and this is why we have a church. Once we make that confession, it doesn’t mean our problems go away. How we respond to problems matters. Perseverance is important.

  1. What do you think is your usual response when confronted with a problem?
  2. What is the source of your moral compass?

Consider This

When tough things happen, our character flaws are revealed. That first response we have to a problem reveals the strength of our character, and it is a lifelong work. Suffering produces perseverance and perseverance develops character, and changed character brings hope.

  1. Read Romans 5:1-5 and list the benefits of being made right through faith in
    Jesus.
    a. What is the purpose of our suffering (verse 3)?
    b. How does hope affect your attitude toward what is happening in your life
    now?
    c. Do all believers have the Holy Spirit? (see Ephesians 1:13) What does the
Holy Spirit do for you? (see John 16:7-8, 13)

  2. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my
path.” Read the following verses and list some preferred directions you could use
the next time you encounter problems.
    a. Proverbs 10:19, 15:1
    b. James 1:19-20
    c. Ephes. 4:32

  3. What does perseverance mean to you?

  4. Read Galatians 5:22-26.
    a. Look up the definition of any two of these characteristics (verses 22-23)
    and list what you learned.
    b. What do you think is the difference between “living by the Spirit” and
    “walking by the Spirit?”

  5. Read James 1:2-5. What is the reason for problems (verses 3-4)?
    a. What are some attitudes you should have when confronted with a trial?
    b. Is asking for wisdom your first thought when facing problems? Can you
see yourself asking God for wisdom, even on the fly?
    c. Consider verses 6-7 (James 1:6-7). What part does faith play in receiving
    wisdom when confronted with problems?
    d. Why do you think faith—believing God is there, listening and willing and
able to provide wisdom so important? (see also Hebrews 11:1,6)

Moving Forward

“I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours” (Mark 11:24). Only God can change us, make us into that moral person we want (and He wants) us to be. The fruit of the Spirit is the evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work in us.

  1. What persistent problem can you persevere through this week?
  2. Ask God for wisdom!
  3. What direction does your moral compass (the Bible) and the Holy Spirit give you for
that problem? Write out some specific points and actions you want to take for your
    problem.
  4. Confess your inability and pray for God’s supernatural intervention in you for
    positive change.
  5. Believe God will do it!
