
Basic Christianity 101
Text: Philippians 3:17-20
Central Truth: As Christians, we are called to grow, mature and imitate Christ as we eagerly look for His return.
v.17 I. The Examples (What to Do)
Paul commands us to imitate him (and others) as he imitates Christ (cf. 1 Corinthians 11:1). Paul knew the value of having a role model. Today we call them mentors, coaches, or teachers. Christians need to be actively involved in a local church for our faith grows best in a community of believers!
vv.18-19 II. The Enemies (What to Avoid)
v.18 Two options:
1. Judaizers (Jews):
2. Antinomians/Libertines (Gentiles):
v.19 Two-fold description of Christ’s enemies:
v.19a 1. Eternal destination:
v.19b 2. Earth bound desires:
Three-fold description:
A. Their fleshly appetites dictated how they lived.
B. They flaunted their sinful living.
C. They lived for the moment (short-sightedness).
v.20 III. The Expectation (What to Desire)
NASB – citizenship, KJV – conversation (Greek – politeuma) It speaks of one’s behavior as a citizen.
