Honor and Compassion

Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact, you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. —1 Thessalonians 4:1 (NIV)

Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders in the Lord’s work. They work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance. Show them great respect and wholehearted love because of their work. And live peacefully with each other. Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people. Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. Do not scoff at prophecies, but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good. Stay away from every kind of evil. —1 Thessalonians 5:12-22 (NLT)

The First, Next Right Thing: Honor

Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders in the Lord’s work. —1 Thessalonians 5:12 (NLT)

Honor is not transactional

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. —Romans 12:9-10 (ESV)

Honor is public and private

The mouth speaks what the heart is full of. —Luke 6:45

Honor makes way for the miraculous

Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. —Mark 6:4-5 (NIV)

The Second, Next Right Thing: Compassion

Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people. —1 Thessalonians 5:14 (NLT)

The ability to recognize the suffering of others and then take action to help. Compassion embodies a tangible expression of love for those who are suffering. —Compassion International

When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. —Matthew 9:36 (NLT)

Compassion in Action
1. Warn those who are lazy
2. Encourage those that are timid
3. Take tender care of those who are weak
4. Be patient with everyone
5. Always do good

You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.
—Luke 6:36 (NLT)

If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care— then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. —Philippians 2:1-4 (The Message)
