May 8, 2022

Luke 24
Emmaus

Hannah

but full of heartbreak
bullied by Pen-in-ah

Mother’s Day
fraught with emotion

to celebrate
Pause to stand with the many folks for whom the day is tough

Significant that this story starts with a Mom
Who isn’t officially a mom yet
Loves and longs for her child, who just isn’t here yet

Israelite
Knows God
Married…husband shows compassion and love to her
“Am I not more to you than 10 sons?”
(You’d think he’d have better practice)

Still, she yearns to be a

Along the way, we see her faithfulness as a Godly example for us
God could have called himself all kinds of things to us
Creator, Sustainer

But, ultimately, he emphasizes Father - parent
Hannah shows us a parent’s love
And her story points to the deep love of God

1). Adversity
Year after year she prayed and sought after Samuel’s birth - before she even knew his name
Bullied, empty - she pursued her calling as a mom

God hears her

Once again, we understand God’s character - he really is on the side of those who are weak, ignored, forgotten, disdained, left behind

Surely, we see in her the reality of God’s pursuit of us
God did know our name - even before time began, and he pursued us through the generations

2). Hannah’s bargain

Funny - everything is from God and for God
Not sure we can bargain with God

Her bargain came with a

She still got to see him, but he served in the Temple
He would go on to do mightly things
Last Judge, Priest, Annointed Kings!

Hannah’s bargain
Give me an only son and I’ll give him back to you
God the Father’s bargain
I’ll give you my only son to bring you back to me.

In this story, you can feel Hannah’s love and her hurt
Story of Scripture - if you are listening, you understand the same
God, our Father, loves us - even though we are far away
God, the Son, gives his life for us - that we might know our Father

Your parents love
Humans - a mixed bag
But like the story of Hannah, let your parent’s love serve as a signpost
Reminding you of God’s love
