Scripture

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. —1 Corinthians 13:8-13 (NIV)

Notes

Happiness = Meaning and Pleasure

2 Implications

  1. Our best moments are not ultimate

  2. Our worst moments are not final

Study Guide

Step One: Open
Read 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 and pray to open your time together in God’s word.

Step Two: Icebreaker (Optional)
Share about the most “childish” thing you’ve done as an adult.

Step Three: Discuss

  1. What stood out to you the most in this weekend’s teaching? What was challenging, encouraging, or confusing to you?

  2. In considering verse 8, that “love never fails,” how would you explain unfailing love with the help of the following scriptures: 1 Peter 4:8, 1 Thessalonians 4:9, 1 John 4:7-11, and Ephesians 4:32?

  3. Describe what comes to your mind when Paul talks about “perfection” in verse 10.

  4. Paul ends this chapter with faith, hope, and love (1 Corinthians 13:13), and in 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3 Paul prays for the believers who display faith, hope, and love. Talk about where you see these characteristics of Christian living in the people around you.

  5. In Kurt’s message, he mentioned 4 approaches to happiness (Rat Race, Nihilism, Hedonism, and Ideal) - If possible, briefly summarize then answer which of these most characterizes your life right now?

  6. Why do you think Paul highlights “love” over faith and hope in verse 13?

  7. In what practical way can you show God’s infinite, matchless love to someone else this week?

Step Four: Close in Prayer
