Title: Life in the Fast Lane
Text: Ecclesiastes 2:1-11
Date: August 13, 2023
Introduction: “Is life really worth living?” This is the question that the Preacher/Teacher Solomon is debating. In 1:1-3 he states his first conclusion: Life is not worth living, because life is full of vanity; (emptiness). Vanity is translated as “meaningless,” “futility” and “pointless” in various versions. Why did Solomon conclude that all is vanity or meaningless? Let’s review from last week. He stated his reasons. There are three:
— because nothing really changes (v 4-7)
— because nothing is really new (v 8-11)
— because nothing is really understood (v 12-18)
However, we must remember that Jesus Christ is “the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:24). He has miraculously broken into history to bring new life to all who trust Him.
Today, our focus is Ecclesiastes 2. Here the Preacher/Teacher, Solomon, continuing his journey in the pursuit of meaning and happiness in life, examined everything from the sublime to the ridiculous. In the great laboratory of life, as he lived in the fast lane, he experimented in three areas. This experimenting is a reality even in our day. What are the areas?
