IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO BE SPIRITUALLY MATURE WHILE
REMAINING EMOTIONALLY IMMATURE

I want to talk today about the need to SURRENDER TO OUR LIMITS.
The Bible clearly tells us in Psalm 139 that we are “knitted together in my (our) mother’s womb(s)” by God Himself, our designer. It also tells us that as a believer in Christ we are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) and we have been born again (1 Peter 1:23; John 3:3).
Our created design has
We are, at times, so helpless, so limited.
In 2 Corinthians 12, Paul gives us insight into this…
“To keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
2 Corinthians 12:7-10
Here is a powerful thought: Our limits are not God’s limits. He is unlimited…He is infinite…totally unlimited in all His ways.
We all have limits:
- -Physical body
-Family of origin
-Intellectual Capacity
-Your talents and gifts
-Your unique self
-Your time
Read John 3: 22-30
22 “After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized. 23 Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. 24 (This was before John was put in prison.) 25 An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing. 26 They came to John and said to him, ‘Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.’
27 To this John replied, ‘A person can receive only what is given them from heaven.’”
John embraced his limits…understanding his purpose.
Pete Scazzero says, “Getting off our thrones and joining the rest of humanity is a must for growing up.”
Here’s what we discover about limitations:
Limitations
God is God and
We serve a God who has no limitations (Psalm 121:4). When we need sleep because of another restless night, he does not. When we’re exhausted after a long day with busy toddlers, he keeps working on our behalf. When we face another day hugging the toilet as chemotherapy runs its course, he is never weary or defeated. When we despair over our inability to move without help, he is our rock and our sustainer.
We learn much about
In the most discouraging moments, we have hope that there is a perfect world coming, one where suffering, disappointment, and loss fade away in the face of our glorious King Jesus (Revelation 7:9-17; 1 Peter 5:10-11).
Limitations Are a
- In our limitations, God gives us exactly what we need in order to make us more like him and prepare us for glory. But there is also another way he uses our limitations.
He uses them to bless us.
Every limitation we face comes from a loving and gracious heavenly Father who only has our best interests in mind. And he is with us every step of the weary path, holding us up and bringing us home.
The key to embracing our limitations is not found in our own strength, as if mere willpower would be enough to carry us through. Rather we find the key to our strength in the strength of Another—the God who loves us dearly. That is how we face the trials, disappointments, limits, and sufferings. We trust in the God who made us, saved us, and loves us enough to walk with us even in the darkness.
Closing Thought:
When my capacity runs low or out, keep in mind:
- “When my capacity ends, it is WELL WITHIN
1 Peter 5:10-11
10 “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.”
