Mark 15:42-43 ESV And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

I. Joseph publicly

his to Jesus

Mark 15:44-45 ESV Pilate was surprised to hear that He should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether He was already dead. 45 And when he learned from the centurion that He was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph.

Mark 15:46-47 ESV And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking Him down, wrapped Him in the linen shroud and laid Him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where He was laid.

II. Joseph sacrificed his

and for Jesus

The true follower of Christ will not ask, “If I embrace this truth, what will it cost me?” Rather he will say, “This is truth. God help me to walk in it, let come what may!” — A.W. Tozer

I was one way, and now I’m completely different. And the thing that happened in between was Him. – Mary Magdalene (The Chosen TV Series)

Discussion Questions:

  1. How do you respond to life’s darkest moments? How can you respond more “in faith” next time?

  2. Why would the prominent Joseph be willing to publicly reveal his allegiance to Jesus?

  3. Does following Jesus make you stand out? Talk about a time when you stood out following Jesus.

  4. It was a sacrifice for Joseph to serve Jesus — it cost him something. What has serving Jesus cost you?
