SERMON DISCUSSION GUIDE

Big Idea

“John tells us that true believers walk the Christian walk. They fight sin. They know they have an Advocate who pleads their case when they confess their sins. And they know that Jesus’ sacrifice satisfied God’s wrath on their behalf. Disciples know God, and the evidence of this is their love for him which visibly displays itself in their obedience to his commands. They know God, his truth, his Word, his Spirit, his Son. They know God’s perfect love, and that changes how they live.”

What stood out to you in this week’s sermon? What were your biggest takeaways?

Read: 1 John 2:1-6
Why is having knowledge of the Christian faith, the Bible, and details of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection not enough? How does a true disciple’s knowledge change how they live?

Read: 1 John 2:1-2, 1 John 1:8-10
What is God’s people’s plan of action for defeating sin and living for him?

How is Jesus our Advocate when we sin? What does it mean that Jesus is the propitiation for our sins? How should we live our lives in light of these truths?

Read: 1 John 2:3-5a, 1 John 2:4, John 14:6, John 14:16-17, John 17:17, 1 John 2:3-5b-6
Can you be confident you are a Christian? How does a heartfelt desire to follow God’s commandments separate believers from pretenders? How can we test our faith?

In what way does your life change when you have the truth of the Word of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in you?

How do disciples display love perfected? How are obedience and love for God inseparably linked?

As disciples, how are we to imitate Christ? What does it look like to walk like him, to live for him, and to follow him?

Does your life reflect or imitate Christ to where you can confidently say follow me as I follow Christ?
