Financial Legacy
What is a Legacy?
Legacy is anything tangible or intangible that someone hands down or is known by that outlives them even after they are gone.
MAIN IDEA:
God gave you everything you need to leave a legacy.
Joy is produced when we use His resources to promote His plans over our own.
Today we are going to talk about 2 types of financial legacy:
- Leaving a financial legacy for your family. (Estate planning)
- Leaving a financial legacy for God’s kingdom
3 Ways to Leave a Good Financial Legacy:
1. Make serving others and meeting needs a lifestyle.
16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. NIV —1 John 3:16-18
2. Everyone WANTS to be generous…But only the ones who have PLANNED to be generous are able to on a consistent basis.
14 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. He called together his servants and entrusted his money to them while he was gone. (PARAPHRASE: Gave one 5 bags of silver, then 2, then 1. The one with 5 and 2 bags invested it and doubled it. The one with 1 bag buried it out of fear…to the servants who doubled it) 23 “The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’ (To the servant who buried it) 26 “But the master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy servant!… 28 “Then he ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one with the ten bags of silver. 29 To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away. NLT —Matthew 25:14-29
PLAN to be a good steward with what God gives you
If you obey God, you will have something to leave your grandchildren…CEV —Proverbs 13:22
3. Investing in the kingdom is one of the best ways to leave a legacy that will last
Kingdom work will always be appreciating assets
6 Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me: 7 Hanamel, your uncle is going to come to you and say, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth, because as nearest relative it is your right and duty to buy it.’…9 so I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels[a] of silver. 10 I signed and sealed the deed, had it witnessed, and weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy– …14 ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed and unsealed copies of the deed of purchase, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time. 15 For this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.’ NIV —Jeremiah 32:6-15
For most people…finances are a source of continual stress…
But what God wants is for your finances to be a source of joy…
There is one who scatters, and yet increases all the more, and there is one who withholds what is justly due, and yet it results only in want. NASB —Proverbs 11:24
