ICEBREAKER

Who is the most famous person you ever met? What was it like to be in the presence of “greatness”?

KEY POINTS

  1. In Jesus’s day, any claim that Jesus is greater than Moses would have raised more than eyebrows. It would have raised religious rage.
  2. Nearly every author of the New Testament claimed that Jesus is greater than Moses.
  3. Any explanation of Jesus’s superiority to Moses must be grounded in Jesus’s flawless moral life and in his resurrection.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Moses was delivered from Pharaoh who was killing all the newborn Hebrew babies. Jesus and his family fled to Egypt after he was born. How are the two events similar?

  2. If shadows are never clear and discernable can Moses and his role be fully understood?

  3. Why did we have the Law if Jesus was always the plan? Why not just give us Jesus first?

  4. Why do you suppose it was so important to show Jesus as superior to Moses in the New Testament?

  5. If Moses represented the Law, did Jesus complete the Law? How exactly did he do this?

  6. Read 2 CORINTHIANS 3:1-6 and answer how the gift of the Holy Spirit changes the role of the Law?

  7. In EXODUS 34:29-35 Moses covers up the glory of God with a veil so that the people cannot completely see it, but in the Gospels, Jesus tears the veil of the temple that blocks God’s presence from his people. What do we now have because the veil is gone that they did not?
