Luke 4:16-21 Sermon notes
June 4, 2023

The Holy Spirit used Luke to focus the Books of Luke and Acts to reveal to the world that Jesus came to seek and save everyone.

Jesus was invited to teach in the service, so He picked up the Old Testament and began reading in Isaiah 61:1-2.

He then place the Scripture down, and began to share with the people who where present, and who are present today. Listen to Jesus’ statment (verse 21)

“Today, this Scritpure is fulfilled in your hearing.”

What a bold statment this was.

Our first phrase: “He has appointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.”

But what does it mean? By breaking down our main verse, (18) we will gain a better idea as to what Jesus truly means.

  1. The poor defined. Poor means bankrupt, an outcast, the hopeless, and the forgotten.
  2. The poor illustrated. But how can we know for sure this what it means?
    a. Luke 4:25-26. Elijah and the widow. (1 Kings 17:7-16)
    b. Luke 4:27. Elisha and Naaman the Syrian. (2 Kings 5:1-14)
    c. Luke 7:36-50. A unknown woman, who is defined as a sinner washes Jesus’ feet with her tears, and dries His feet with her hair.
  3. The poor applied to us.
    a. The opportunity for salvation is for anyone and everyone.
    b. Geniune salvation is more than just getting you out of the mess you are in. What Jesus offers is live changing forever.
    c. But what if I know I am saved, but I find myself “poor” nothing to offer my KING? All you have to do is ask Him to forgive you, and He will.

This journey begins with a first step, a step of faith and surrender. Come this morning.
