CHANGE WORTHY OF PURSUING
Text: Joshua 5:9-12
9 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.
10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.
11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day.
12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
1. Typology
1) Passover (cf. 1 Cor. 5:7)
- The Passover looked back in remembrance on what God did to bring the Jews out of Egyptian bondage. But, it is also a picture of what God would do by bringing salvation through the Lamb, Jesus Christ. (cf. 1 Cor. 5:7)
2) Feast of Unleavened Bread
- The feast spoke of Jesus’
3) Manna
- Manna was wilderness food. It was provided by God to the Jews while the wandered in the wilderness. It was a 40 year miracle.
- The manna is a picture of Jesus, the bread of life. Jesus is the true manna, the true bread come down from heaven. (John 6:31-35)
- The manna is picture of Christ’s earthly ministry, His crucifixion ministry.
4) Old corn (fruit of the land)
- The old corn was Promised Land food. It was the fruit of the land flowing with milk and honey.
- The old corn speaks of Christ in His
2. Theology
- Do we need to feed on the true Manna? Yes. It is how we are saved.
- When we eat of the true Manna, is that the end of our Christian experience? No.
- If all we ever do in our Christian experience is feed on the Manna of Christ (i.e. get saved), then we will never have
We must feed, not only upon the crucified Lord, by faith, but we must also feed upon the risen Lord and High Priest, Jesus.
We pursue spiritual growth (change for my good and God’s glory) by feeding upon old corn, the resurrection ministry of Jesus.
- Spiritual growth is growing in the knowledge
- Growing spiritually means knowing Jesus more and more. (cf. Phil. 3:10; Heb. 6:1)
3. Practicology
- When a seed is planted in soil, the soil begins to breakdown the seed coat of the seed. Inside the seed is life, but the only way the life can come forth is if the seed coat is destroyed. The life in the seed can then sprout forth, grow a stalk, and bear fruit.
When the power of the Holy Spirit is working in and through us that is when we experience depth in our Christian life.
Why feast on the Risen Lord and grow?
1) Change from spiritual growth is God’s
2) Change from spiritual growth is normal. (cf. 1 Cor. 3:1)
3) Change from spiritual growth is
4) Change from spiritual growth is God honoring. (John 12:26)
