Scripture passage: Romans 13:1-7

January 17, 2021

  1. Read Romans 13 and summarize the passage for the group. Tell everyone how it fits into the surrounding verses and the rest of the Book of Romans as a whole.

  2. Describe the Roman Empire of Paul’s day and tell the group why it would have been surprising for the church in Rome to read this in 13:1: “Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities.” Why did Paul give them this command and how does it relate to us today?

  3. How has the institution of government “been established by God” in verse 1? Why is it important for us to remember this and how does it help us to submit to our political leaders? How do we balance this with the fact that our leaders sin and do not always do what is right?
  4. What does it mean for the government to “bear the sword” and be “an avenger who brings wrath” in verse 4? How does government serve as a deterrent to crime in this world and how does that help us to respect it?
  5. After studying this passage, tell the group one new thing that you have learned about the Lord and how He looks at politics. Now tell the group how it will change the way that you look at it. How will it change the way you look at the difficult situation that we are facing today concerning the lockdowns and the Pandemic?
